Welcome to Dixie

This site is dedicated to the great tool Dixie.

Dixie was created way before 2002 by Tomica Crnek.

The development was started, because there was no Tool like this available, except, you go and by one for a lot of bugs Cry. But, still if you buy one, the possibility is very big, that the tool you are going to buy is not everything doing what you want or the way you want.

This Project is still owned by Tomica Crnek

So, if you would like to say thank you, the best place is:

HERE !!

If you have any questions (problems etc.) please feel free to register your self at the FORUM and meet us there Wink

About my self, a few people know me as ankn99 and not only at the Dixie project:

I'm working for the government, I was looking a long, long time for tool that was free, flexible, easy to understand for changing things the way I needed at my places. So one day I gave Dixie a try, don't ask me how many tools I tried, how often I got frustrated, how many projects I saw, which are dead just a few years they show up at the admin-sky Wink.

To be honest, it didn't work the first time I installed it. Hmmm, ok I thought, the forum that was hosted at sourceforge.net (sf.net works also) was frequently used, I send a question to Tomica, guess what the answer cam the same day, wow I thought, and after a few days I got Dixie working. I tested it at my work and it is now working at a production server, I'm managing with my colleagues about 400 devices in one domain and 11 subnets. I got 3 mail servers, 3 dhcp and 2 dns server running,

And you know what !!  I love Dixie Kiss.

Well .....

now I got deeper and deeper into Dixie, I did the first changes to it to make it more compatible for users who were using Firefox or Mozilla. I started to post some patches at the mailing list helped out users who got stuck with the installation, now I'm trying to help Tomica implementing a few things into Dixie.

Why an extra place for Dixie ???

I had a small homepage with a photo album running (Coppermine), that thing was at a shared hosting space with access to 2 mysql DBs, since the providers are hosting a few hundred homepages at one server and a few thousand users at one DB-Server I decided to rent a virtual server, for peoples who like speed, it's better you look for a virtual server or a real one. Anyway,  now I got some spare Megabytes and a few slots traffic I thought I'll give Dixie a small little space, where a real Forum will have place and a small easy manageable CMS (Joomla is the best choice for this), and here you are !!! Have a nice stay.

Dixie was mainly a DHCP & DNS administration tool. But you can administrate today a lot more with it !!    Tongue out

Today you can administrate (if you want) DHCP-, DNS-Servers, further has it masks where you can administrate Firewall-Functionality, an acl for squid, first step are done to collect some data from network switches (Administration for this will be done also, but it'll take some time), a few things from the thinstation2 project from Sourceforge.

Things you can administrate in the DNS-Part:

Zones (domain.tld) hosts and services inside of it (server.domain.tld, mail-server.domain.tld etc), MX-Records, Hardware records A-, PTR-Records, aliases etc.

Reverse-Zoning is handled automatically.

You will be able to configure DNS-Services that work in hand with a secondary, mirroring etc. Generate permissions, who has what kind of rights at your server (read, zone transfers, write etc.)

DHCP:

simple static DHCP, dynamic DHCP (with Pools), Load balancing with two DHCP-Servers (This part is mostly handled by 2 servers them self). You can generate groups, where you tell the device what to boot per bootp. Here you can handle a few thins for the thinstaion2 project too. You will be able to handle dynamic dns and a lot more.

SQUID:

depending on a small button at the host section you decide if a host has access to your squid server or not.

Active Directory:

to be filled from Tomica, since I have no Idea what that is good for (I Just like Linux as a server I would never let M$-Products take over).

Firewall:

if the host you are managing has Firewall capabilities, you will be able to manage Firewall rules at this device.

The software got a lot of potential, a user and a office management is build in, so you can manage the users which are using your hosts, you can tell in which office the devices are, a map function is build in also, probably usable for locations that are a few kilometers away from your office.

What do you need to run Dixie:

A Server of course, with a running

  • Web server that understands how to interpret php, good choice will be apache
  • a RDB best choice (and for the moment the only choice)  MySQL (later others will be included).
  • Since you will touch system files, it is necessary to have root-rights at the machine you plan to run Dixie at and of course at the machines you plan to let run DHCP, SQUID etc.
